Txotxongiloa

Spain

A female puppet appears locked in a room, prostrate on the floor and immobile. After several experiences, ropes are attached to her body and her movements begin to be more and more fluid. Each of the strings is associated with a scene related to an aspect of women's social problems, such as the body, equality or gender.

Director  - Sonia Estevez

Director Statement

“I come from a family of women in which the father figures, unfortunately, have left too soon. Since I was little I have seen that women have to perform too many tasks to be able to survive in the system. I thought it was like that because of the absence of those father figures. Later I realized that, although there was that male figure in families, the situation of women was not very different from mine”. From these vital experiences of Sonia Estévez, director and animator of Txotxongiloa, and her reflection on the possibilities of living as a free woman in today's society, the story that is staged in this short film emerges. As everyone knows, this is a fundamental issue that does not admit of a definitive answer, let alone a solution, beyond its constant consideration from different places. In reality, that is what this creation consists of: an artistic, sensitive and symbolic experience at the same time. It was about finding a way to express the contradictions that are experienced in relation to the desire to be free or the feeling of lack of freedom. It is not a recipe, or a consolation, or even a philosophical statement about the possibility of being a free woman or the problems that this entails, but an invitation to reflection through aesthetic pleasure and enjoyment. If one is honest, one can truly say that whatever it is to be free, it is something to be longed for as much as it is feared. Some of that contradiction is set in motion in this creation.

- Four films were semi-finalists at film festivals

- Films screened at 56 film festivals/venues around the world with 104 films as official selections

- Film in distribution

- 150+ credits on IMDb

James W. Hawk was born in New Eagle, Pennsylvania, and grew up in East Cleveland, Ohio. He is of German, Irish, Scottish, and Native American (Seneca) descent. He attended Ohio University in Architecture and completed his higher education at Cleveland State University as a Mechanical Engineer. He pursued a career in industrial sales and marketing with a Fortune 500 company, which resulted in relocations to Rochester, New York, South Bend, Indiana, and New Haven, Connecticut.

Hawk’s first independent film project was a two-hour cinema verite called Old School Roadster, which aired on Connecticut television.

Jan Harlan (executive producer for Stanley Kubrick and Steven Spielberg) viewed Hawk’s work and gave it high marks. F. Miguel Valenti saw Hawk’s work and assessed it as better than much of what is released these days. Dr. Raymond Foery (Professor Emeritus Quinnipiac University Film, Television, and Media Arts) said of Hawk, "A truly imaginative filmmaker with a highly sophisticated sense of cinematic acuity. Jim has been remarkably active, in various genres. As a director of narrative fiction, he has shown a sure hand with actors and a sophisticated appreciation of mise-en-scene. As a creator of animated visual motifs, Jim has displayed a mastery of the latest techniques and a sophisticated sense of composition complemented by a rich appreciation of theatrical style. Each of his projects also reveals the mind of an artist grappling with the eternal philosophical dilemmas of our existence on this planet – as well as some speculation about those other planets out there. In short, Jim’s work forces us to think as well as to look."

One of Hawk’s films was an exhibit at a Rome Italy art exhibition recently. Two of his animation films are award-winners. Four of his movies were semi-finalists at film festivals. One of Hawk’s films was recently awarded semi-finalist at a science fiction film festival out of a thousand entries. He has had films screened at 56 film festivals/venues around the world, with 104 films being official selections. He has had his films shown on local television.

Hawk wrote, produced, and directed his first scripted short film, Alpha to Omega: Part 4, with limited resources and plenty of ingenuity. Since that time, he has produced, written, and directed many narrative short films, documentaries, music videos, animation films, experimental films, time-lapse films, and industrial presentations.

Hawk has also worked for the Connecticut Film Industry Training Program for three years as an Associate Producer and Director of the “behind the scenes” film of their short film project. He has been interviewed several times on television regarding the making of some of his short films. His work appears on IMDb, where he is one of the top lifetime contributors. He is a colleague of the USVAA (United States Veteran’s Artist Alliance. He also serves on the board of directors of MOCCAI and the advisory committee of CARTMICA.

He continues to make short films and has added “published author” to his resume. He recently published the first short story of his ATHOIA Anthology, which is titled TO beta-VANVERDEN AND BACK on Amazon Kindle. Clyde Phillips, a writer, and producer for the award-winning television series, DEXTER, gave VANVERDEN a 5-star rating.

Director Statement

I tried to interpret the concept proposed by the composer and reflected in the title “In Threes” and in the structure of the musical track itself. I presented it as an abstraction in different ways/meanings.

I used the most of visuals/ideas from my abstract ideas notebook calls “Book of Nothingness” 2021: https://www.behance.net/gallery/183398773/Book-of-Nothingness

“In Threes” means:
Tree as Three (kind of playing with words and symbols):
1. (vegetable) intuitive, soft, rounded shapes, symmetry...
2. (logical) lines, connections, growth, tension, constructions, grid, pendulums, signs...
3. (chaotic) destructive, strobe, interruption, paint run, shapeless spots

in Three Worlds:
1. Lower world (roots, dense lines, red-black-brown colors)
2. Middle world (development, multiplication of forms, fractals, pipes, direction, green-orange-violet-pink colors)
3. Upper world (neural network, flashes, breaks, unfinished forms, glow and flicker, yellow-white-blue colors)

Some kind of consistent half abstract action, which as repetition, loop, with overcoming, hindrances and development of the situation, sometimes everything starts from the beginning, but in a different way. In the end, the movement goes without failures and images does not repeat itself literally. New forms multiply, their movement acquires the unity of rhythm.
In the final, the image-idea of the Tree as an embodiment of the Three Principles unites the manifestations of forms, following the rhythm of the heart.

The Bolt's Story

Islamic Republic of Iran

A Bolt among all other bolts in an abandoned workshop, decides to get out of its container and discover its own life. While wandering around, it finds out the secret of its life and the purpose of its creation. It realizes "a well fit Nut” is needed to make it complete and useful. To reach that nut, a deadly jump is on the way and it needs to choose: remaining incomplete forever, or doing the jump.

Director Biography - MiohammadReza  Alimorad

I was born on May 26 1987 in Tehran, Iran. Independent filmmaker and photographer. My first film “Wednesday” participated in international film festivals such as Split International Film Festival 2013 and Experiment in cinema, Albuquerque, USA.
I learned cinema’s basics from my father who has been making films for children since 1970 in Iran. Having This possibility filled the place of academic studies for me. After leaving university in 2012 I started to make films and advertising videos.
My latest finished project took 7 years to get complete and these years were a great growth for me in the field of cinema.
I also do street photography as a hobby which has great effects on my cinematic feelings.

Director Statement

“Jump” to seize a goal is a necessity for achieving it. Jumping from a safe zone to a point where we consider it as our goal is the initial move. These jumps could be safe and also could be deadly and life threatening. This film narrates a jump that could be equivalent to losing life. I believe that all living creatures will experience this “Jump” in their lives. Whether big and fatal or small and intermittent.
“The Bolt Story” by using metaphors and mankind symbols, narrates someone’s story who feels the urge of becoming perfect and effective. Being effective with the sense that being beneficent as one part of the whole, whatever the subject is. A Bolt needs a Nut of exact size to get closure together and attach parts of a machine and eventually, when the machine is completed with all the details. It will work.
The story begins with the birth of the Bolt by throwing the bolt’s container. It comes to self-knowledge while wandering through the workshop. When it gets to the machine’s map, it discovers what it has made for and how it can be useful. Yes, It has to find the exact sized Nut which is not easy to find and will face the Bolt to a deadly jump. Now the biggest decision: accede to the deadly jump, or staying and remaining useless forever.
